What Are The Different Types of Mattresses?

by Jenny Borton

There are three main types of mattresses support technologies widely produced today. Since everyone’s sleep preferences and needs are unique, these different types of mattresses are specifically designed to give you better sleep in different ways. The best mattress is the one that fits you best.

Innerspring Mattress

Traditional mattress construction is a coil-based support system found in innerspring mattresses, offering a push-back support when you lay down, often with additional comfort layers on top. A mattress’ coil count will tell you how many coils are in the mattress, while the coil gauge will tell you the thickness of the wire used to construct the coil. In many cases, a higher coil count can indicate a more premium mattress that offers more support. It’s not automatic though – don’t just decide on a mattress based on coil counts as there are other factors that impact both quality and fit for each person.  The coil gauge works in reverse: the lower the gauge number the stronger and, assuming consistent material, the more durable the coil.  The best-known innerspring brands are Sealy Posturepedic and Simmons Beautyrest, although in recent years both of those brands have also started making the additional types of mattress we discuss below.

BENEFITS: Supportive, great for stomach sleepers, budget-friendly, easier to change position, large range of comfort options

Foam Mattress

Foam mattresses are constructed with high density foam materials and do not include any coils. These are favored for their body contouring attributes that provide immediate pressure relief by molding to the shape of your body, distributing your weight, and maintaining proper alignment.  The brand synonymous with foam mattresses is Tempur-pedic whose patented memory foam technology was originally developed for use by NASA.

BENEFITS: Great for side sleepers, featuring conforming support with slow responsiveness (non-bouncy, molding feeling), pressure relief, reduces aches and pains, allergen resistant, reduced motion transfer

Hybrid Mattress

A hybrid mattress is basically a combination of an innerspring and foam mattress, giving you the best of both worlds! With a coil base support structure and specialty comfort foam layers, this balance of push-back support and conforming support is a great choice for a wide selection of sleepers!  You might ask what makes a hybrid a hybrid if innerspring mattresses also have comfort foam layers? Great question! The truth is they are pretty similar, but hybrids can have 2 distinctions. First, a hybrid mattress will often have a completely flat top with no tufting, whereas a traditional innerspring will have tufts where the support layers are tied down periodically across the top surface.  Second, hybrid mattresses contain “specialty” foams like memory foam (A.K.A. visco), latex, or gel foam.

BENEFITS: Great for back and combination sleepers, but work well for others as well depending on the type of foam and support technology, benefits of innerspring and foam mattresses combined, breathable
