Should I Get A Soft or Firm mattress? Does My Sleeping Position Matter?

by Jenny Borton

"Yes"—your sleeping position absolutely matters when it comes to choosing a mattress! Whether it be a softer plush, a firmer feel, or something in-between, one of the most important things to consider when choosing a mattress is what support level you need based on your preferred sleeping position.

In order to find a mattress that will alleviate pressure points in the areas you need it most while maintaining correct spinal alignment, let’s take a look at how you sleep. Find your sleep position below to see what support level you should look for!

Side sleepers typically prefer a softer feel on the top of their mattress. Most side sleeper pressure points will be on your shoulders and hips, so a mattress with a plush to medium comfort level will allow your mattress to contour to these areas accordingly to alleviate pressure points and ensure proper spinal alignment.

Stomach

As a stomach sleeper, your hips need to be elevated to ensure proper spinal alignment. This can be achieved with a mattress with a firmer support level so that your hips don’t sink, avoiding a dipped “U-shape” sleep position that directly leads to back pain. Since the majority of your pressure is on your back, a mattress with a firmer support will hold your body up in proper alignment!

Back

If you sleep on your back, a medium support level is recommended for you! Most of the support you’ll need is in your lower back, so a medium firmness will allow enough support to keep it aligned while still allowing some light to moderate comfort layer contouring - just enough to keep you from sinking in. Not too soft and not too firm… but something in-between.

Maybe you rotate between all of the above, or you’ve invented you own unique sleeping position (pretzel anyone?)! If so, do you have one that you favor the most? If you don’t have a primary position, a medium firmness is a good place to start. Keep an eye out for mattresses that feature quick responsiveness—this makes switching positions easier so you’re not waking up during this process at night.  If you have a sleeping partner, also look for motion isolation so they can rest easy when you’re doing your position gymnastics ????
