Will It Take Time To Get Used to My New Mattress?

A quality mattress, featuring lumbar support for your spine and components that are fresh from the factory, will take some time to get used to, most commonly between 30-90 days (if not sooner), so don’t be alarmed if the mattress that gets delivered to your home feels different compared to the one you tried in a showroom!

Just like buying a new pair of shoes, when you purchase a new mattress, you’ll need to go through the process of breaking it in. Consistently sleeping on your mattress every night will break in the materials and allow your body to adjust.

Sleep on your new mattress every night!

Within the first few nights of sleeping on your new mattress, you may experience some soreness, but don’t feel discouraged! You are most likely experiencing this because your body had become used to your old mattress and your new one is providing you with better actual support that you are not accustomed to yet. No matter how uncomfortable it may feel, please resist the urge to sleep somewhere else or go back to your old mattress for the first 30 to 90 days.

While you sleep, your body weight will put pressure on the mattress, breaking it in, so please give it time. If you want to speed up the process, try rolling back and forth on your mattress or crawling on top of it for several minutes to help loosen up the materials faster. Memory foam mattresses are made from high-density materials so they tend to require a longer break-in period due to all the different layers of foam. Innerspring mattresses are typically broken in relatively quickly, especially compared to all-foam mattresses or hybrid mattresses containing “specialty” foams.


Hot or Cold?

Sometimes we hear from new mattress owners that their mattress is firmer than what they remember the showroom sample to have been. While not being broken in yet (discussed above) is a common contributing factor, another important element is room temperature, especially for specialty foams like memory foam (A.K.A. visco) or all-foam mattresses. The foams in these mattresses are VERY sensitive to temperature. You might not think a couple degrees is a big deal, but small thermostat settings can have a big impact on the perceived firmness of certain foams. If you want your foams to feel softer, you may need to bump up your thermostat a bit. If you’re used to keeping the thermostat down because you sleep hot and you are considering an all foam or specialty foam mattress, be sure to look for one that is breathable and facilitates air flow through the mattress.

Another quick note on sleeping hot. It is a frequent occurrence that an owner of a new mattress may feel like they sleep hotter on the new mattress than they did the old, and in fact that may actually be the case! Did you know that increased circulation throughout your body may cause your extremeties to not have a decreased body temperature? When an old mattress starts to lack support, that will often cause blood to pool at low points where the body touches the sleeping surface (think hips, shoulders, and joints). The blood pooling at these “pressure points” is not making its way out to the hands, fingers, toes, and feet. Then, when a new mattress with proper support is introduced and the circulation system returns to working like it should without pressure point pooling, guess what? The extrememities may feel warmer than they have. But don’t worry, this increased blood flow is healing and restorative, so it’s a good thing! It will require some getting used to though, which is another reason we say to give your new mattress 30 to 90 days of consistent use to get your body accustomed to it.
